Surgical oncology is the field of medicine that deals with the surgical removal of cancerous tumors. It is a relatively new field that has only come into existence in the past few decades. The first successful surgery to remove a cancerous tumor was performed in 1846, and since then, surgical oncology has evolved into a highly specialized and effective cancer treatment modality.
The goal of surgical oncology is to remove all the cancerous tissue from the patient’s body while minimizing the damage to healthy tissue. This is accomplished through a variety of different surgeries, each of which is tailored to the specific type and location of the tumor. In some cases, surgery may be the only treatment necessary to cure cancer. In other cases, it may be used in conjunction with other treatments, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
There are three main types of surgical oncology: curative surgery, which is performed to remove all cancer and leave the patient disease-free; palliative surgery, which is performed to relieve symptoms caused by cancer but does not aim to cure the disease; and debulking surgery, which is performed to reduce the size of a tumor in order to make it more susceptible to other treatments.
Surgical oncologists are highly trained surgeons who have completed additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. They work closely with other members of the cancer care team, such as medical oncologists and radiation oncologists, to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient, also known as precision medicine.
Surgical oncology is a rapidly evolving field that is constantly coming up with new and better ways to treat cancer. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, be sure to ask your doctor about all of your treatment options, including surgery.
